The idea to make a portable version of my previous untitled #06 piece came as a follow-up thought, to use a cd player instead of the turntable had secoind implications
the CD player was the second disc (ie. flat and round) based player product made available, it's revolutionary technique, light, made it's definite mark on how we live with music today, it was the beginning of the digital era. For the portable version it was obvious i had to use the discman.
Although the discman was an easy choice and I wanted to respect the medium through which it was made possible, and to put the highlight on the change in how sound is read, from friction/drawing: needle and vinyl, pen and paper; to light: laser and cd. The obvious parallelism was photography, light and film.
i hacked a discman reading head mechanismm in order to control the motor that sets the position of the cd player head, through an arduino board and an envelope follower the amplitude of the sound sent in through the audio input is directly related to the position of the reading head. With no sound input the cd player head is closer to the center of the film spinning axis, eventually with an extreme volume it will reach it's farmost position away from it's axis.
For sefety reasons i also replaced the original laser with a harmfull white led, but kept, and took great advantage of, the mirrors and lens system. The lens is extremely important to make the light hit the film as a constant very thin beam, the focus of the lens is related to it's distance from the film .
The action of exposing the film is performed in total darkness and then sent to the lab for developing.
"52nd Street" Serie
The sound to drive the drawings was also chosen due to historical reasons, in 1982 Billy Joel's "52nd Street" was the first album to be released in a CD. This CD happens to have 9 tracks, and for that reason made the whole series around that number.
Also being my first and perhaps only serie with this device i wanted to include all the developing process within it.
The final serie is planned to have:
9 pieces: 6 series of photographs and 3 objects
-1. Polaroid Series BW - unique serie of 9 bw polaroids testing consequtive resistor values to obtain diferent exposure results
-2. Polaroid Series Color - unique serie of 9 bw polaroids testing consequtive resistor values to obtain diferent exposure results
-3. 8x10 negative film- unique serie of 9 bw negatives, no prints, chosen negatives from the process of fine-tunning the whole system
-4. 8x10 slide film- unique serie of 9 slides mounted in a light box
-5. 8x10 color negative film- serie of 9 8x10 color prints
-6. 8x10 bw negative film- serie of 9 100x125cm bw prints
