This was a small installation for a peculiar place, EME festival happens every year in the church of a XV century castle in Palmela. Located on one of the highest spots in the area from there you can see forever*, from the start my idea was to use the wind particularity of that specific place.
A wind fane was installed in the windy church entrance, the fane was attached to a modified pot that would turn 360º (instead of the normal locked rotation of aprox. 270º) and still act like a normal variable resistor, this pot was conected to an arduino board which ran an algorithm that would interpolate the "blind" 90º of the modified pot based on the wind recent history and calculate the actual wind direction. There were four computer fans hanged inside the church in an cardinal points fashion, north - top, south - bottom, east - right, west - left, these fans were connected to a midi controlled dimmer that was receiving commands from the arduino board through a midi out connection.
The arduino program mapped the actual wind direction to
the four fans smoothing the values, so that if wind was blowing stright from north only the top fan would be working and rotating at100%, if the wind was coming form the north-east the the top fan would work at 50% and the right fan would be working at 50% too, and from here all values in between and around the 360º.
Locating yourself in front of the fans you would actually feel from where the outside wind was blowing .
