I was asked to do a piece for this one night VJ dedicated event happening in Lisbon, i was determined not to use a projector, the room allready had the acrylic panels installed so i thought of this site-specific installation and pushed further my idea.

The controller for the whole piece was a patch in max-msp that gathered data from the sensors through an arduino board, set the fans speed, the light intensity and all the sound generation.

The behaviour of the piece is related to the activity in the space, the PIR sensor sends pulses to the max patch via arduino and max gathers this data in a variable which is incrementing with these activity detection pulses and slowly decrementing with time. The higher the variable value, the faster the fans rotate and the higher the balloons float. The Ultrasound sensor height location sets a threshold for detecting which ballon goes higher than it's position, when this happens the msp patch triggers one note in his piano synthesizer module, the distance from the sensor to the last ballon can be seen like the piano keyboard, the closer to the sensor higher the notes pitch. This virtual keyboard had 4 octaves and was programmed to play only six notes of a major scale, meaning that each time the ballon crossed the ultrasound sensor threshold it would randomly trigger one of 6 six notes in it's corresponding octave. The sounds generated by the piano synthesizer were then sent through a delay that had it's feedback parameter dynamically changing related to the PIR sensor relative variable. The Light projectors intensity was also related to PIR variable.
